Autumn
Hello
Farm life at Lorbottle is not quite into the winter mode, only having managed to finish the harvest off three weeks ago, Leslie is trying put some crops back in but its getting late and some may have to go in spring crops.
The 6 boys have gone out with the ewes. This is the start of the shepherds year. We put ram harness on the boys with a coloured crayon which lies between their front legs and every time they service a ewe the crayon leaves a mark on the ewes back end, this helps us sort them into first week, second week etc at lambing time so if you are out in the country side and see sheep with coloured bottoms you know what they have been up too.
The ladies are now inside again for the winter and we will spain the calves soon so the mums can have a rest until they start calving again. Rapid the bull was especially pleased to be inside out of the sodden fields and have a nice warm straw bed to lie on.
September was quite a sad month firstly we had to have Roger one of the Jack Russell’s put to sleep what a character he was, we had him a long time and lots of fun out him.
Secondly I would like to pay tribute to my Dad who passed away at the end of September who was also quite a character and I don’t think picking sloes will ever be the same for me again (perhaps it was just as well there were not many to pick) Thank you Dad for all the help you gave me setting Sloe Crafts up and the time spent fruit picking but most of all thank you for the recipe which we found taped inside one of the kitchen unit doors.
